May 31, 2016 "...a pretty fantastic week!"

Hello!

This week was a pretty fantastic week!  Elder Mangus is awesome! Has a positive attitude and always making hilarious jokes!  The ward is fairly friendly.  There are some things that we are going to start so that the missionary work can progress.  But everything has been pretty good.  We don't have any investigators right now but have set some goals to work with some part member families in our ward.  So it is looking promising.  I forgot how many hills Oceanside and Vista have.  We biked almost all day every day this week and the hills are killing me.  Along with running.  So we have been super tired.  As soon as we get done running we go to bed.  And our apartment is super hot at night so it's really uncomfortable.  But we ordered some fans from the mission office so we should be good from now on.  We also have some new sisters in our zone.  And they are from Whales and Canada.  It is super funny to tease them about tea and maple syrup.  But the are super cool and have cool accents.

This week during studies I was reading a talk given by President Monson in 2012.  And I ran across this line and I thought it was worthy of sharing. "So much in this life depends on our attitude.  The way we choose to see things and respond to others makes all the difference."  And yeah haha I just liked that.

Anyways I gotta get running but I will talk to you all next week!

Love,

Elder Miles

May 23, 2016 Elder Miles is headed BACK TO VISTA!

Hello Hello!

Well yes I am being transferred this Tuesday.  And I am going back to Vista! Not in the YSA but into the 9th ward.  My companion will be Elder Mangus.  He has been in Vista for 6 months now.  He is from Montana and it will be fun.  The ward sounds pretty fun from what I've heard throughout my mission.  So I am looking forward to it!

This week we were able to see some awesome stuff happen.  We received a referral from some of the sisters in our zone.  Her name is Peggie.  We were able to teach her and gave her a Book of Mormon.  She said that she would pray about it and is trying to get work off so that she can come to church this next week.  She has a friend in one of the other wards so that has helped out a lot.  We also were able to get a inactive family to come back to church yesterday.  They are Phillipino (I think thats how you spell it?) and get so excited about everything!  And then last night we gave a Book of Mormon to a family that was on a walk.  And said that we could come back this week.  So things are starting to pick up just as I am leaving.  What the heck! haha but it has been a pretty good week.

We have been stopping by some of my favorite families as well, and they don't want me to go because "I am so dang amazing". Haha no, but it is hard leaving areas.  Even though there are hard times, you are able to love the people here.  The gospel truly does allow everything that is good to grow.  And I have had some awesome friendships here.

Well I gotta go now so I will see you all next week!

Love,

Elder Miles

REMEMBER, REMEMBER....

"And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall."

May 16, 2016 Transfer calls coming Saturday...bitter-sweet

This week was another good week.  Saw some more snakes, found a couple really awesome potential investigators and just nice weather.

We talked to a guy named Mike on the street a couple days ago.  He is super open to the gospel.  And has a family.  We haven't been able to meet with him yet but should here in the next few days.

We were also able to teach a couple lessons to the families in our ward.  They still aren't really willing to do anything missionary wise, but we are getting there.  Transfer calls will be this Saturday.  I will probably be transferred.  But other than that not a whole lot is going on.

Well I gotta go now and hopefully we are able to get into more houses this week!

Love,

Elder Miles

May 9, 2016 Baptized: to be or not to be...that is the question:)

This week was a pretty good week that ended being able to face time home to the family! Just an update on how things are going here:

Shannon is not an investigator anymore.... We ate dinner at his house on Saturday and he told us he wasn't going to be baptized this upcoming week.  He was having a conversation with his girlfriend, who is a member of this ward, and for what ever reason she said, "you don't get baptized twice."  That triggered something in his head, like he was already baptized.  So he met with our bishop on Monday and told him that he thinks he was already baptized. They looked and found out that he had a record that had just been lost.  Turns out Shannon was baptized in 1998 in Washington! But he doesn't remember anything about it.  No missionaries, no church, no nothing.  Just being baptized.  Apparently he was going through a really rough time, like drugs and such.  But when he joined the navy and was stationed in San Diego, his records were sent there on base.  And he had never been contacted.  But there you go.

Everything is going pretty well here.  But gotta go now.  I will talk to y'all next week!

Love,

Elder Miles

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY MOM!!

Elder "SMILES":)

May 8, 2016 Mother's Day SURPRISE!!

So last week Elder Miles was pretty much in the dog house for sending such a short email. I now realize why it was so short....I was VERY surprised when in Sacrament meeting today my oldest daughter & a sister to another missionary in our ward were called up to the stand. They each we're able to read a special letter about their mothers that had been written by their own missionary brothers. The following is Elder Miles' letter...

There really is no way that I could express how grateful I am to have a mother that loves me.  This letter is probably the absolute least I could do to express that.  My mom has taught me a lot of things in my life time.  And I'm pretty sure I made it really difficult for her.  So there is one of the bigger things that she taught me.  Patience.  That is one of the greatest attributes of my mom.

Romans 5:3-5

3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

And what we learn from this scripture is that patience leads to "hope."  In the 13th Article of Faith it says, "We believe all things, we HOPE all things, we have endured many things, and HOPE to be able to endure all things."  This is what my mom has taught me.  That no matter through what trial she's had, that if she turned to the Lord and had hope, she could become stronger.

Ether 12:27-28

27 And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.

28 Behold, I will show unto the Gentiles their weakness, and I will show unto them that faith, hope and charity bringeth unto me—the fountain of all righteousness.

In the world's eyes I am not perfect.  I have trials, I make mistakes.  But one thing I do know, is that in my Heavenly Father's eyes, I am coming closer to perfect.  Now I won't ever, in this life, reach perfection.  But because of my mom and the things I have learned from her, we have grown closer.  My family and I have grown closer.  And most importantly, my Heavenly Father and I have grown closer.

There is a story that I would like to share in the Book of Mormon.  It's one of my favorite stories.  Its the 2000 stripling warriors.  Now even though the artists that paint all of the Book of Mormon stories make these guys look like they are huge 200 lb meat heads, I don't think they were like that.  They were just regular young men.  They had weaknesses.  But one thing that we learn from the Book of Mormon is that they honored their mothers.  They had been taught to rely on the Lord.

Alma 56:47-48

47 Now they never had fought, yet they did not fear death; and they did think more upon the liberty of their fathers than they did upon their lives; yea, they had been taught by their mothers, that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them.

48 And they rehearsed unto me the words of their mothers, saying: We do not doubt our mothers knew it.

They had been taught that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them.  Every single one of them were wounded.  Just like every single one of us makes mistakes.  We are all wounded in some way in this life.  Because of my mom and what she has taught me, that if I have hope in God, if I rely on him, he will deliver me.  He will give me the strength I need to return back to him.

I love my mom.  I am grateful for her example that she has set for me.  And all of the blessings I've had because of her faithfulness and obedience.

And I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Preach My Gospel; A Guide to Missionary Service (Author's thoughts)

God Is Our Loving Heavenly Father

"God is our Heavenly Father. We are His children. He has a body of flesh and bone that is glorified and perfected. He loves us. He weeps with us when we suffer and rejoices when we do what is right. He wants to communicate with us, and we can communicate with Him through sincere prayer."

As I was looking through "Preach My Gospel" I was curious what kind of questions our Elder Miles was asking their investigators. While I was looking over these it hit me that these are wonderful questions we should ask ourselves periodically & see how they resonate with us:

Do you believe that God is our Eternal Father?
Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Savior and Redeemer of the world?
Do you believe that the Church and the gospel of Jesus Christ have been restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith?
Do you believe that [current Church President] is a prophet of God?
What does this mean to you?
Will you read and pray to know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God?
Will you pray to know that Joseph Smith was a prophet?

I absolutely DO believe God is our Eternal Father and His Son Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer!! I am grateful for this knowledge that I've come by through faith, prayer & a sincere desire to know. I have a strong testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith & that through the assistance of the Spirit, he translated the golden plates into what we now have as The Book of Mormon. I LOVE this book! It has brought me much peace as it has answered questions that have come from my troubled heart. I know that I am a DAUGHTER OF GOD & that He loves me....sinner & all. I know that President Thomas S. Monson is a prophet of God & through the Lord's guidance & direction he leads us today as members of this THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS. I know that I can find hope & healing in my Savior Jesus Christ & it is through HIS ATONING GRACE that we can & will be saved if we put our trust in him & do our all to serve, love & bring others unto HIM.

This is my testimony....(Amy J. Miles)
